Piano Regulating in Oxford…

The feel of a piano, how the keys respond to your touch, how evenly they move and how consistently they repeat, is governed by the action mechanism. This complex assembly of hammers, springs, levers and felt components is what translates the movement of your fingers into sound. Over time, these parts wear, compress and shift out of alignment, causing the instrument to feel sluggish, uneven or unpredictable.

Piano regulating is the process of adjusting and realigning these components to restore the action to its intended specification. I offer a thorough regulating service for both grand and upright pianos across Oxford, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

What Is Piano Regulation?

A grand piano contains around 10,000 individual parts, and each one plays a role in how the instrument feels and responds. Regulation involves carefully measuring and adjusting the relationships between these components so that every key behaves identically, the hammers strike the strings at the correct distance, and the repetition mechanism functions smoothly.
In upright pianos, the action works differently but the principle is the same. Felt compresses, springs lose tension, and small tolerances that were set at the factory gradually drift. Regulation brings everything back into balance.

Signs Your Piano Needs Regulating

You may notice that some keys feel heavier or lighter than others, that notes are slow to repeat, or that the piano simply does not respond the way it used to. Keys might stick intermittently, the touch may feel inconsistent from one end of the keyboard to the other, or you may find it difficult to play quietly without notes dropping out. These are all common signs that the action needs professional attention.

How the Regulating Process Works

I begin every regulating job with a thorough analysis of the action and keyboard, identifying exactly where the issues lie and what adjustments are needed. I then work through the regulation systematically, from the keyboard bedding and key height through to the hammer line, let-off, drop, back-check and repetition spring tension.
This is collaborative work. I discuss my findings with you and agree a plan that reflects both the condition of the instrument and how you use it. The aim is always to return the piano to a smooth, responsive and enjoyable playing experience.
