About Bob Cunningham

My love of music was recognised as a young lad in Yorkshire. Born into a family with a long musical history, I have gone on to study, play and record as a musician and DJ/producer across the UK. The piano featured from the beginning. I am the son of a piano tuner, Iain Cunningham, and also the brother of one too. It is a family trade that has been a major influence since birth and an industry that has been calling me since the days of shadowing my father on tunings and restoration projects as a child.

In my teenage years I took a job at Besbrode Pianos in Leeds where I went from making cups of tea to restringing concert grands. Then changes in life moved me to London and before long I was working my way up in the hospitality industry, managing bars, restaurants and organising countless events.

It was following a move to Oxford and having children that I decided it was time to reconnect with my family roots and retrain as a piano tuner and technician.

Studying at the Piano Technology School in Rugby under the guidance of professional concert tuner Steve Droy, I completed an intensive course, training in piano tuning, repairs, regulation and voicing. During this time I travelled to London's Royal Academy of Music to complete a course in grand piano regulation with their head piano technician, Doug Chapman.

I then enjoyed a few weeks working alongside the craft masters at Piano Restorations Ltd in the beautiful rural setting of Buckinghamshire, deeply involved in the high-end restoration of grand pianos.

My training has continued with visits north to work at Cunningham Piano Services, refining my tuning skills and working on pianos for the family business that has thrived for decades in the Leeds/Bradford area
