Piano Tuning In Oxford…

A well-tuned piano is a pleasure to play. Over time, changes in temperature and humidity cause the strings to stretch and contract, gradually pulling the instrument out of pitch. Without regular attention, even the finest piano will begin to sound flat, dull or inconsistent across the keyboard.

I provide a professional piano tuning service for homes, studios, schools and performance venues across Oxford, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Every tuning is carried out with care and precision, ensuring your instrument sounds its absolute best.

A standard tuning brings your piano back to concert pitch at A440hz (whenever possible), the international standard used by musicians and manufacturers worldwide. During every visit, I tune the full range of the keyboard, carry out a light clean of the instrument and attend to any minor repairs that may be needed on the day. You will also receive practical recommendations on future maintenance to help keep your piano in top condition between visits.
For most pianos in regular use, tuning once or twice a year is sufficient to maintain stable pitch and a consistent, pleasing tone. Pianos in professional or educational settings may benefit from more frequent attention.

Standard Tuning

If a piano has not been tuned for an extended period, or has been exposed to significant environmental changes, the overall pitch can drop well below A440hz. In these cases, a standard tuning alone is not enough to restore stability. A pitch raise is the process of carefully and systematically bringing the tension of every string back up to the correct level before a fine tuning pass is carried out.
Because of the considerable forces involved, this service is typically split across two visits. The first session raises the pitch and allows the strings, soundboard and frame to settle under the increased tension. The second visit, usually a few weeks later, completes the fine tuning to ensure the piano holds its pitch reliably going forward.

Why Regular Piano Tuning Matters

Tuning is not just about how your piano sounds today. Regular maintenance protects your investment in the long term. A piano that is tuned consistently stays closer to concert pitch, which means each subsequent tuning is quicker, more stable and less stressful on the instrument's structure. Pianos left untuned for years can develop more serious issues, including cracked bridges, loose tuning pins and irreversible string damage.
Regular tuning also allows your technician to spot early signs of wear or damage before they become costly problems, making it one of the most important things you can do for the health of your instrument.
